Papers of the Rind, Mathias, Bethel, Hole and Napier families

Rind photographs, [c. 1860]-1966, Rind correspondence and other family papers, 1801-1996; Mathias correspondence, deeds, other family papers and notes on the pedigrees of the Mathias and other families, 1599-1954; Mathias, deeds and other documents relating to property in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, 1634-1888; and Mathias/Napier/Pier/Bethel deeds and other documents relating to properties in Somerset, 1608-1961; and miscellaneous items, including deeds relating to Bermuda, 1641-1989.

The Mathias family had resided in Llangwarren, Pembrokeshire, since the 16th century, when Thomas Mathias (d. 1617) married Jane Lloyd, daughter and co-heiress of Llangwarren. The estate descended in the male line, eventually passing to Charles Delamotte Mathias (1777-1851) on the death of his uncle, Lewis Mathias without issue. Charles Mathias purchased Lamphey Court, Lamphey, in 1810-1811, and began building a new mansion there in 1823. Charles married Mary, eldest daughter of John Bethell, of Hassage, Somerset. The family advertised Llangwarren for sale in 1987 and Lamphey Court in 1978. Alyne Louisa Eliza Hulton married James Mathias, the 7th son of Charles Delamotte Mathias. Subsequently, Elinor Amy Lloyd Mathias, niece of James Mathias (1823-1886), married Burnet George Rind of Allenbrook, Dale, Pembrokeshire. According to the 1873 return of owners of land Lewis Mathias of Lamphey Court owned 4,562 acres (all in Pembrokeshire) with an estimated rental of £4,113.
