Administrative / Biographical History

The Association of Engineering & Shipbuilding Draughtsmen was formed in 1913 . In 1965 , the association became known as the Draughtsmen & Allied Technicians Association (DATA). The association acted as a trade union for its members, providing support during disputes with employers and protecting and campaigning for greater rights in terms of working hours, pay and conditions. The Association also paid out illness, redundancy and dispute money.

The Association of Engineering & Shipbuilding Draughtsmen: Glasgow South West Branch was formed at some point prior to 1957 . The branch’s area covered many of the major Clyde shipbuilders such as Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd, Alexander Stephen & Sons Ltd, and Upper Clyde Shipbuilders and firms such as the Glasgow coppersmiths, Blairs Ltd.

The Branch was administered by a Branch Council who met fortnightly with monthly general meetings for all members held at the Highlanders Institute, Elmbank Street, Glasgow, and then in later years at the Glasgow Trade Union Centre in Carlton Place, Glasgow. The committee consisted of c10 members including the president, chairman, treasurer, registrar and minute secretary. The Branch was affiliated to the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) and the Glasgow Trades Council and had elected representatives who attended their meetings. The association also had links to the Workers’ Educational Association and organised educational lectures and encouraged members to attend the national Association’s summer schools. In 1965 , the branch became known as the Draughtsmen & Allied Technical Association: Glasgow South West Branch.

By 1975 , the union had become known as TASS, the Technical, Administrative and Supervisory Staffs union. In January 1988 , TASS amalgamated with the Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs (ASTMS) to form the Manufacturing, Science & Finance union (MSF).
