NPG - Items loaned to the Gallery to accompany permanent displays, 1968-1999

Records relating to the long term loan of objects to the Gallery, ordinarily non-portrait works including furniture, ceramics, maps, architectural drawings and weapons and armour. Unlike portrait works on long term loan to the Gallery, these items were not allocated an internal acquisition number.

Materials contained in these files include: routine paperwork regarding the rationale for display, selection of items for loan and the administration of the loan over time until termination. In some instances a black and white photographic image of the loaned work has been included.

The records suggest that many of these loans were instigated as part of the major redevelopments and rehangs of the late 1960s and the early to mid 1970s, where borrowed objects featured alongside works from the Gallery's permanent Collection, 'in order to induce some feeling of historical period and to relieve the monotony of portraits.'

Files in this series often relate to the re-display of various rooms within the Gallery.
