Scope and Content

A collection of diaries, 1892, 1896, 1904-1905, 1923 and Sunday diaries, 1886-1926 with information regarding chapel meetings and forthcoming sermons. The 1905 diary has references to the religious revival in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd.

Note books of sermons and notes on sermons, with lists of sermon topics for young people. Also, note books and loose papers of poetical compositions, in particular pryddestau entered in various Eisteddfod competitions; carols and hymns.

Amongst the miscellaneous items there is a collection book to clear the debt owed by the Tabernacl chapel, 1916 and minutes of the Caernarfon District (C.M.), 1885-1888.

Administrative / Biographical History

Rev. Richard Roberts Morris was a Calvinistic Methodist minister and a poet. Born in 1852 in the parish of Beddgelert, Caernarfonshire he was educated at Clynnog, Caernarfonshire and Holt, Denbighshire and attended the Bala College in 1878.

He served as minister in Siloh chapel, Caernarfon between 1881 and 1893 and then at the Tabernacl chapel in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Merioneth from 1893 until 1924.

As a poet, he competed in several Eisteddfod competitions and some of his hymns appeared in Cn a Moliant. Llyfr Tonau ac Emynau (1916). His most well known hymn is Ysbryd byw y deffroadau

He married Katherine Morris in 1882 and they had four children. He died in 1935.

Arrangement

Where possible, arranged according to record type and then chronologically. The papers were received at different occasions and are listed separately and incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts.
