Scope and Content

Collection of photographs in a padded black album 285 x 370 mm, illustrating forestry work in Mauritius during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including views of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Pamplemousses. A title page is inscribed 'Colony of Mauritius, Forests and Gardens Department, December 1907.' All photographs are captioned in detail in a copperplate hand. However, pages 47-52 have been removed. There is an index on page 72, from which it appears that page 47 showed a rest house and pages 48-52 contained images of shooting and fishing. Plates 10, 14-21, 25-28, 35-36, 38-41, 55, 69-72 and 77-79 are approximately 25 x 75 mm. The remainder are larger, up to 200 x 150 mm.
