Administrative / Biographical History
The Social Change and English, 1945-1965, Project was a three-year project (2009-2012) funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The aim of the project was to produce a history of the developments in the teaching of English in three London secondary schools in the twenty years after the Second World War. The schools chosen were Walworth Comprehensive, Hackney Downs Grammar School and Minchenden Grammar School (Middlesex). They were selected because they represent an interesting range in both origin and location and because they influenced the way English teaching developed in both the UK and around the world. The project team interviewed teachers and pupils together with the study of documents, photographs, films and students work. Project team: John Hardcastle was Project Director, Dr Georgina Brewis was Research Officer. Other team members: Dr Peter Medway, Professor Richard Andrews, Dr David Crook, Patrick Kingwell
