Scope and Content

Recorded interviews with members of various local strike committees, colliery workers and other individuals including members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Colliery Officials and Staffs Association (COSA). Also included are BBC radio and television reports of the events. The recordings were made 1974-1975 but cover the period 1972-1975 in subject matter.

Administrative / Biographical History

The 1974 Miners' Strike Study was created as an off-shoot of The First South Wales Coalfield Project 1972-1974 sponsored by the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and carried out by the University of Wales Swansea. The study team set out to record the events as they were taking place and therefore the study is a unique account of the feelings of the miners themselves both during the strike and its aftermath.
