Correspondence of the Rt. Rev. Hugh Willoughby Jermyn (1820-1903)

The correspondence consists of: a body of letters (circa 150 items) mainly on theological issues, to archbishops, bishops, deans, as well as politicians, soldiers and writers; and separate letters to Miss Langlands, and Colonel Grubb.

Hugh Willoughby Jermyn, son of the Rev. George Bitton Jermyn (1789-1857), was born at Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire, in 1820. He was educated at Westminster School and he studied at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He was an incumbent of St. John's, Forres, Morayshire, 1847, and Dean of Moray and Ross, 1851. He became Archdeacon of St. Christopher's, and Rector of St. George, Basseterre, in the West Indies, 1854. In 1858 Jermyn was Rector of Nettlecombe, Somerset, and Rural Dean of Dunster, 1860. In 1870 he was Vicar of Barking. He became Bishop of Colombo in 1871, and resigned in 1875 when he became Bishop of Brechin in Scotland. He was Primus of Scotland, 1886-1901. Latterly he had lived in Broughty Ferry, Angus. The Rt. Rev. Hugh Willoughby Jermyn died on 17 September 1903.
