Scope and Content

Postcards are in colour and black & white with images which are mainly photographic with some being drawings or paintings. Captions are in Japanese, English and Chinese with a handful of postcards date stamped as 1935.

Images for Japan are predominantly of Tokyo (featuring temples, shrines, public buildings, the Imperial Palace, street scenes and public transport) and of natural features such as lakes, waterfalls, rivers, springs, mountains and volcanoes. There are a number of depictions of Mount Fuji. Other places in Japan represented include Kyoto, Nara, Nikko and Hokkaido with most of the images being of temples, shrines and public places (e.g. parks). There are also a few images of the Japanese at work or at social events.

Images for Taiwan are of Takao (featuring street scenes, the harbour, public buildings, the old castle and fortress), Tainan (featuring street scenes, parks, temples and shrines) and natural features such as waterfalls, rivers, lakes and mountains. There are also some images of the Taiwanese at work and at leisure as well as a few images of transport, infrastructure (e.g. bridges) and local produce. Includes images of Taiwanese aboriginal peoples [indigenous peoples] - their lifestyle and customs.
