Scope and Content

Four volumes containing George Hankinson's precise transcripts of inscriptions on over 2,500 gravestones and monuments in the parish church and graveyard of Bowdon, Cheshire.

  • Volume I, dated 1884, contains copies of inscriptions on gravestones and monuments in Bowdon churchyard (pp. 1-208); copies of inscriptions on monuments, brasses and windows in Bowdon church (pp. 209-224); and copies of inscriptions on monuments, gravestones, brasses and windows now lost, destroyed or covered over (pp. 225-240). There are indexes of personal names, places, professions and trades, and rhyming epithets. Thirteen enclosures include a large plan of Bowdon church and graveyard, showing individual grave plots, ink on tracing cloth.
  • Volume II, dated 1894, contains copies of inscriptions on gravestones and monuments numbered 1 to 1,200 in the outer portion of Bowdon churchyard. There are indexes of personal names, places, professions and trades, and rhyming epithets. Six enclosures.
  • Volume III, dated 1899, contains copies of inscriptions on gravestones and monuments numbered 1,201 to 2,000 in the outer portion of Bowdon churchyard. There are indexes of personal names, places, professions and trades, and rhyming epithets.
  • Volume IV, undated but probably first compiled around 1901-2 and updated until 1904-5, contains copies of inscriptions on gravestones and monuments numbered 2,001 to 2,186 and 2,215 to 2,217 in the outer portion of Bowdon churchyard, with addenda to the inscriptions in Volumes I-III. Not indexed.
