Administrative / Biographical History
Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738) was a Dutch physician, chemist and humanist. He is credited with being the founder of clinical teaching and the modern hospital. Amongst his many medical treatises, he wrote 'Institutiones Medicinae' (1708) and 'Elementa Chemiae' (1732).

Custodial History
The volume was once part of Nottingham Medico-Chirurgical Book Society, a library founded in 1828 and actively maintained until the early 20th century. The core collection was purchased by The University of Nottingham in 1971 with another substantial part of the collection discovered and acquired in 1973. The collection comprises some 1160 volumes and it remained physically in the University's Medical Library until 1994 when it was transferred to the Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections. This volume was transferred to the manuscript and archive collection of the department in March 1997.
