Gerald Stephen Downs was born in York in 1933. He trained as a teacher at St Bede's College, Durham, in the 1950s and during his professional career he worked at a number of schools in North Yorkshire, including Selby County Junior School, Carr County Junior School and Kirk Smeaton Church of England Primary School, where he was Acting Headteacher in 1988.
Following his retirement, he studied for a Master's Degree with the University of York. His dissertation on the subject of 'Public Elementary Education in York, 1870-1902' was completed in 1998.
Gerald Downs died on 18 February 2013.
