Administrative / Biographical History
This township was part of the old ecclesiastical parish of Eccles. It was in Chorlton poor law union between 1841-1849, and in Barton upon Irwell poor law union between 1849 - 1894. It was divided into a number of "hamlets"; Eccles, Monton, Winton, Barton, Higher Irlam, Lower Irlam, Dumplington, Croft, Bromyhurst, Whittleswick, Lostock, Davyhulme. In 1894 Barton upon Irwell township was dissolved and its area divided between Eccles Borough, Irlam Urban District and Barton Moss and Davyhulme townships.
