Manuscript diary kept by John Austin in "Orr's Diary" for 1855, also containing entries for the years 1856, 1857 and 1858. Sporadic entries make the course of events difficult to follow, but the writer gives some details about his friends and social activities in Greenock and Edinburgh, and about the courtship of his future wife.

Administrative/Biographical History
Little is known about John Austin, apart from internal evidence gained from the diary. He was living in Greenock in 1855 where he worked in an office, but his family lived in Edinburgh, and he seems to have moved back there early in 1857. He married Eliza Lumsden Pratt in June 1858 in Edinburgh, and he records their courtship and marriage in the diary.
