Administrative / Biographical History

The Institute was founded in 1857 'for the encouragement and advancement of Engineering Science and Practice' and incorporated by royal charter in 1881. Its offices in Park Place, Cardiff, were opened in 1894 and included a lecture theatre, library, refectory and lounges. The Institute published its own Proceedings. It was dissolved as a professional organisation in 2007, but a SWIE Educational Trust was established at the same time.
