Copies of records relating to Rev James Hadfield

CD containing images of historical records collected by members of the Hadfield family, in particular images of Harry Foster Hadfield's Scrapbook, which relate to Rev James Hadfield's family's time in Lifu. The Scrapbook comprises both text and photographs. There are also images of the recently restored mission house at Lifu (built about 1860), taken by members of the Hadfield family during visits to Lifu between 1980 and 2005.

James Hadfield was born on 8 Jan 1864, at Ashton-under-Lyne. He studied at Western College. He was appointed to Lifu, Loyalty Islands, with the London Missionary Society, and was ordained on 17 Jul 1878. He married Emma Foster on 30 Jul 1878. They sailed on 4 Sep 1878, and arrived at Lifu on 23 Dec. On 2 Apr 1879, he proceeded to Uvea, arriving 3 Apr. At the close of 1886, Mr Hadfield was appointed to Lifu, where he arrived on 10 Nov 1886. Early in Apr 1888, he left Lifu to visit Mare. He went on to Uvea, returning to Lifu on 26 Jun. In 1898, Mr Hadfield brought to England his 'Iaian version of the Scriptures'. The Paris Missionary Society having taken on responsibility for the work in the Loyalty Islands, Mr & Mrs Hadfield left Lifu on 19 Oct 1920, reaching England on 19 May 1922. Mr Hadfield then retired from active service. According to the 'LMS Register of Missionaries', "The evangelisation of New Caledonia was due to the service of native teachers taught by Mr Hadfield and his predecessors...". The children of James and Emma Hadfield were all born during their time in Lifu, and spent their early childhood there. They included Harry, Ella, Arthur and William.
