Scope and Content

Original press photograph. Full caption on reverse reads, "Methodist missionary begins hunger strike as protest against the wealth of churches in face of world poverty. The Rev Merfyn Temple, 49, a Methodist missionary, today began a hunger strike by the tomb of David Livingstone, in Westminster Abbey, as a protest against the churches in Britain and their wealth and misuse of resources as against the needs of the world's poor. The Rev. Temple has chosen the week following Christian Aid appeal as he feels that this is when the churches will be feeling at their most complacent about their efforts to feed the hungry world. Mr Temple has been a Methodist missionary in Zambia for the past 25 years."
