Shanghai Municipal Police photographs

Administrative / Biographical History

The Shanghai Municipal Police was formed in 1854 and policed the International Settlement at Shanghai until 1943. Originally composed of 'Britons' it later took in officers from, amongst other groups, White Russian refugees, British Indians, Jewish refugees from Central Europe, and members of the Japanese and Chinese communities. The album possibly belonged to P. Thornton who left the SMP in 1907.
