Scope and Content

Copies and transcripts of personal documents relating to the visit to Bad Godesberg made by Margaret Jones in September 1938 as a typist in the Foreign Office to provide secretarial support for the second meeting of Neville Chamberlain and Hitler, 22-23 September, 1938. Copies and transcripts made by her daughter, 2007-2008.

Chamberlain flew to Munich on three occasions to meet with Hitler in an effort to avert war in September 1939. Neither the first meeting - which was held at Berchtesgaden,on 15 September nor the second - in which Margaret Jones was involved - did not result in any agreement. The third meeting - a conference at Munich on 29 September - resulted in the signing of the Munich Pact by Chamberlain, Daladier, Hitler and Mussolini.

Administrative / Biographical History

Margaret Rosalind Gregory (d 2003) (nee Jones), daughter of Rev Gerald E. Jones, was educated at Merchant Taylor's School for Girls, Crosby and St Andrews University, graduating in French and German. After taking a course at a secretarial college in London, she joined the staff of the Foreign Office in 1938. In December 1939 she joined the British Embassy in Brussels, remaining there until being evacuated in April 1940. She married Robin Gregory, c 1941 and had two daughters
