Sir Henry Lewis Papers

Material consists of a copy of a college photograph; a scrapbook dated 1909-1917 featuring press cuttings etc mainly from the period 1914-1917 and wartime issues. Also includes notes and correspondence, dated ca. 1920, relating to the question of uniting the Calvinistic Methodist colleges of north Wales and regarding the establishment of a theology faculty at University College of North Wales.

Sir Henry Lewis (1847-1923) was a prominent Calvinistic Methodist elder and temperance advocate in north Wales. He was born at Bangor, educated at Friars School and at Bala Calvinistic Methodist College. An enthusiastic supporter of the University College of North Wales (now University of Wales, Bangor), he was involved in finding a site for the new college buildings and was vice president of UCNW from 1919-1923. He is the author of several works, including, with H. Barber, The History of Friars School published in 1901, and in 1907, a book on the history of the Tabernacle (C.M) church at Bangor, which includes much general information on the history of the town itself. He was married to Anne Edwards and they had seven children. He was knighted in 1911.

Material was received on separate occasions and incorporated in chronological order into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts .
