Administrative / Biographical History

The Joint Counties Lunatic Asylum, Abergavenny, was opened in 1851 and initially served the Monmouthshire, Herefordshire, Brecknockshire and Radnorshire. From 1897 it became the Monmouthshire Lunatic Asylum, then Monmouthshire Mental Hospital between 1916 and 1923. The hospital was then renamed Pen-y-Val, until 1950 when it became known as the Pen-y-Fal Hospital. The hospital was closed in 1996.
