Administrative / Biographical History
A manor was a territorial unit with legal functions that was originally held by a landlord who was himself a tenant either of the Crown or of a mesne lord who held land directly from the Crown. Court Leet was the manorial court which dealt with petty law and order and the administration of communal agriculture. It was usually held every six months. Court baron was the manorial court which dealt with the transfer of copyhold land, upon inheritance or sale, which determined the customs of the manor, and which enforced payment of services which were due to the lord of the manor. It was usually held every three weeks.
