Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
In 1846 , James Shaw established the ironfounders, Shaw & McInnes , in Maryhill, Glasgow, Scotland. In 1865 , the firm moved to Springbank, Glasgow, to the Firhill Ironworks. It was amongst the most important firms in the iron trade in the late 1880s. The premises in Springbank were of a considerable size and included spacious workshops and foundries, employing a large number of people. A special business was done in manufacturing cast iron pipes for gas, water or steam, with different kinds of joints: plain, turned, bored and flanged. A lot of time and attention was also dedicated to manufacturing pipes according to engineers' special designs. All descriptions of pipes for hot-water heating apparatus, rain-water pipes, stove pipes and various others related to house-building and sanitary purposes were produced in large quantities. The firm used high quality material, producing the very best of goods, and thus had a great reputation within the industry. They had successful branches in London, Liverpool and Birmingham, England, and had influential connections in Britain and all over the world. By 1939 , Shaw & McInnes were a limited liability company.
In 1953 , Shaw & McInnes Ltd acquired Maryhill Foundry, Glasgow, from Kerr & Co , ironfounders, and by 1965-1966 wanted to dispose of the Maryhill concern. In 1992, Shaw & McInnes Ltd was a member of the CI group of engineering companies; CI Group PLC was a specialist in steel and engineering products. In 1997, Shaw & McInnes Ltd was taken over by the Glenfield Group of companies based in Kilmarnock, Scotland. Shaw & McInnes Ltd went into receivership in 2001 .
