Administrative / Biographical History

Towyn Friendly Society was established in c.1830 in Tywyn, Merionethshire. Members paid a subscription and in return received a range of benefits, including sick pay, pension, and assistance to dependents. The Society continued into the 20th century, but numbers decreased until there were only 13 registered members in 1948. Aberllefenni Slate and Slab Quarries Co., Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire, managed the Aberllefenni Quarry, close to Corris, Montgomeryshire, during the 19th and 20th centuries; its records became incorporated in those of Towyn Friendly Society.
