The collection contains material on the Institute's corporate management including finance and meeting minutes, correspondence, papers re members, press releases and newspaper articles, reports and material re Towards Racial Justice and "Race Today". The collection is primarily original paper-based material with some paper-based facsimiles (mainly in the newspapers).

Administrative / Biographical History

The Institute of Race Relations was founded in 1958. Its focus was originally research and publication of race relations material. This changed focus in 1972 to become more focused on responding to research needs of Black communities and current racism in Britain , both social and institutional. It published "Race and Class" journal and was affiliated with the Towards Racial Justice publication "Race Today".
