Mathias Family Estate Papers

Papers of the Mathias family of Llangwarren, 1680-1918, including deeds relating to land in Pembrokeshire, 1680-1867; wills, 1776-1793; and correspondence, 1780-1846.

The Mathias family had resided in Llangwarren, Jordanstown, Pembrokeshire, since the 16th century, when Thomas Mathias (d 1617) married Jane Lloyd, daughter and co-heiress of Llangwarren. The estate descended in the male line, eventually passing to Charles Delamotte Mathias (1777-1851) on the death of his uncle, Lewis Mathias (1740-1815) without issue. Charles Mathias purchased Lamphey Court, Pembrokeshire, in 1810-1811, and built a new mansion there in 1823. He married Mary Bethell of Hassage, Somerset. Their children were: Lewis Mathias (1813-1882), who married Emily Catherine Lawes (d 1877) of Harpenden; the Rev. William Mathais (1816- 1864) of Pencoed, Pembroke, who married Eliza Stradling of Bridgwater; Charles Mathias (1817-1888); George Mathias (1819-1840), of Glastonbury, who married Caroline Law, of Staple Grove Lodge, Somerset; Henry Mathias (b. 1820) of Haverfordwest, solicitor, who married Charlotte Maria Carleton Lloyd; Edward Mathias (b. 1822); James Mathias (1823-1886) of Croston whose 2nd wife was Alyne Louisa Eliza Hulton (d 1923); Alfred Mathias (b. 1825); Thomas Mathias (b. 1827) of Haverfordwest and Frederick Mathias (b. 1828). Lewis Mathias' eldest son, Charles (1849-1918), married Cecilia Antonia Stokes (d 1935) of St Botolphs. The Mathias family advertised Llangwarren for sale in 1987.
