Administrative / Biographical History
John Black, born in Mortlach (Banffshire), graduated MA at King's College in 1855, gaining the Simpson Mathematics Prize. After a period as schoolmaster at Banchory Devenick (Kincardine), he became an Inspector of Schools in Scotland. From 1868-1881 he was Professor of Humanity in the University of Aberdeen. He was awarded an LL.D by the University of Glasgow.
