Scope and Content

Sub-file SZ/SE/1/1 consists of seven sub-sub-files, one for each year, in which correspondence, notes, agenda and minutes of meetings of the Council of Management and Editorial Board of the Journal of Endocrinology, are intermingled.

Sub-file SZ/SE/1/6 consists of a large bundle of correspondence relating to the acquisition of the Journal by the Society for Endocrinology and the legalities involved in changing the company's Articles of Association. By this time the company is known as The Journal of Endocrinology Ltd. See also File SZ/RS/9/3, which discusses the printing of scientific journals and makes some specific refrences to the Journal of Endocrinology.

File SZ/SE/3 Correspondence, 1938-1992 ,contains files of correspondence with: Professor C.E. Dodds, 1938-1945; Dr S.J. Folley, 1946-1952; Professor C.H. Gray, 1951-53; Professor C.R. Harington, 1938-1940; Professor G.F. Marrian, 1939, 1956; Dr A.S. Parkes, 1941-1951; Mr P.C. Williams, 1939-1948; and Dr F.G. Young, 1938-1943. There is also a file of Miscellaneous Correspondence, 1939-1983.

There is considerable overlap between files SZ/SE/4 and SZ/SE/5. Sub-file SZ/SE/4/4 and SZ/SE/5/1 relate to the Symposium on the Anterior Pituitary, 12 December 1946, Sub-files SZ/SE/4/6 and SZ/SE/5/2 to the Symposium on the Adrenal Cortex, 28 March 1947, Sub-files SZ/SE/4/8, and SZ/SE/5/3 to the Symposium on the Assay of Urinary Steroids, 28 June 1947, and Sub-file SZ/SE/5/4 to the Symposium on Neuro-hormonal Mechanisms, 5 January 1949, 1948-49. Sub-file SZ/SE/4/1 comprises two sub-sub-files of correspondence.

The Proceedings were published in the Journal of Endocrinology and there is also considerable overlap between Sub-file SZ/SE/4/1 and the files relating to the Journal (File SZ/SE/1). In Sub-file SZ/SE/4/1there is correspondence concerning a suggestion, made in 1948, that Solly Zuckerman might take on the Editorship of the Journal.

Administrative / Biographical History

The quarterly Journal of Endocrinology, to which File SZ/SE/1 refers, was founded in 1938 and Solly Zuckerman was a member of the Guarantee Committee, the original owners of the Journal. In 1939 a limited company, The Company of Endocrinologists, was incorporated and assumed ownership of the Journal. Zuckerman became a founder member of the Council of Management, and the Editorial Board. Alan Parkes was the first Chairman of the Council of Management, Dr F.G. Young the first Secretary, Dr Peter Bishop the first Treasurer, and R.L. Noble the first Assistant Editor.

The principal object of the Company of Endocrinologists was To own and publish a journal devoted to the publication of communications which advance or are likely to advance knowledge concerning the internal secretion glands, the mode of their action, the nature of their secretions and the disorders of their functions [draft Memorandum and Articles of Association, 1938].

The Society for Endocrinology, the foundation of which is the subject of File SZ/SE/2, came into being in July 1945 at a meeting of 22 contributors to the Journal of Endocrinology. The inaugural meeting was held at Guy's Hospital in April 1946. At an AGM on 24 July 1946 Solly Zuckerman was confirmed as Hon. Editor of the Society's Proceedings, Alan Parkes was elected Chairman, Dr S.J. Folley, Secretary, and Dr Clive Emmens, Treasurer. The other members of the Society's Committee were Dr Peter Bishop, Dr C.H. Gray, Peter Williams, and Prof. F.G. Young. An inaugural address by Prof. C.R. Harington was given at the AGM, together with a series of demonstrations.

Zuckerman was elected an Honorary Member of the Society for Endocrinology in 1968.
