Scope and Content

Minute Book in loose-leaf folder, recording minutes of meetings of the League from 7 Jun. 1969 to 7 Apr. 1982. Including annual accounts from 1974, and a printed Constitution [1972]. (MS 343/1)

The collection also includes an autograph book belonging to Alice M.B. Foster of Hucknall Torkard. Autographs dated 1909-1936. The majority are dated 1909-1910 and were probably written by fellow nursing students at the General Hospital, Nottingham. Three loose photographs of groups of nurses were found inserted into the autograph book. (MS 343/2)

The third item is a poem, 'Remembering the 50's', by Daphne Fenton, née Ward, a trainee at Nottingham General Hospital in September 1950. It is not known when the poem was composed, but it has been typed and printed from a computer [1980s or 1990s]. (MS 343/3)

Administrative / Biographical History

The General Hospital Nottingham Nurses' League was founded in 1948 to provide a forum for discussion of professional matters between nurses employed in or trained at the hospital, to provide social contacts, and to raise money to assist elderly and needy members. In 1971, following the integration of various different Schools of Nursing into one Group School for the hospitals in Nottingham, the League was reconstituted, and its name changed to the Nottingham Hospitals Nurses' League. The first Annual General Meeting of the new League was held in November 1972. In 1981, the League became the Nottingham Nurses' League, in order to incorporate nurses working outside hospitals.
