UMIST Cuttings Collection

This material is held atUniversity of Manchester Library

Scope and Content

Cuttings of news stories primarily relating to UMIST and its predecessor bodies. The cuttings books comprise a useful source of information about major events and activities at the institution, including building openings and degree ceremonies, appointments of staff, staff obituaries, and feature articles about research work, student life and related subjects. Nearly all of the material is sourced from newspapers rather than magazines, and from non-University publications, mainly local newspapers, such as the Manchester Guardian, Manchester Evening News and Manchester Evening Chronicle.

As well as being a valuable source of information about the institution's activities and personalities, the cuttings collection can provide interesting information about how the UMIST was reported in the local and national press over time.
