Lawrence Rowntree Archive

Correspondence, journals and photographs of Lawrence Edmund Rowntree, pertaining to his childhood, his medical studies, his time in the Friends' Ambulance Service and his active military service during the First World War, as well as letters of condolence received by his mother Constance Rowntree following his death at the Battle of Passchendaele in November 1917, 1901-1919.

Journals and related writings of Lawrence's sister Jean Wilhelma Rowntree, [1910s-late 20th century].
Journal of Lawrence's sister Sarah Antoinette 'Tony' Rowntree, 1920.
Family memorabilia [including items relating to Constance, Lawrence, Violet and Jean Rowntree], 1889-[20th century].
Family photographs, [early 20th century].

Records are open to the public, subject to the overriding provisions of relevant legislation, including data protection laws. 24 hours' notice is required to access photographic material.

The archive was gifted to the Borthwick Institute in 2017 by the family of Lawrence Rowntree. A further addition was made to the archive in 2018.

A reprographics service is available to researchers subject to the access restrictions outlined above. Copying will not be undertaken if there is any risk of damage to the document. Copies are supplied in accordance with the Borthwick Institute for Archives' terms and conditions for the supply of copies, and under provisions of any relevant copyright legislation. Permission to reproduce images of documents in the custody of the Borthwick Institute must be sought
