Papers of Roderick Ross

Material mainly relating to University of Exeter including photographs, commemorative programmes, lectures, presscuttings, assorted University documents. Also material relating to the University College of the South West of England. Documents and photographs relating to international academic meetings, plus one envelope of photographs and newscuttings relating visit of Rennes Delegation in 1956 and 1967, and other material.

Roderick 'Roddy' Ross was born in Oldham, the youngest of four children of Scottish parents. He left school aged 16 to work for Oldham Local Education Authority, whilst attending night school after work. A scholarship enabled him to attend evening classes at Manchester University, where he obtained a BA in Administration in 1937 and an MA in 1939, followed by a Diploma in Education and Teacher's Certificate. Between 1949 and 1946 he served in M.M. Forces, leaving with the rank of Major in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. On demobilisation, he worked as a schoolmaster in Cumberland before being appointed Lecturer in Public Administration at the University College of the South West of England (UCSWE) in 1949. In 1952 he became the Registrar of UCSWE and then the first Secretary of the University of Exeter when UCSWE received its university charter in 1955. He also served as Secretary to the Board of Management of the Northcott Theatre from its inception in 1965 until 1975, the year of his retirement from the University of Exeter. After retirement, he worked as a consultant in Botswana and Swaziland, helping their respective colleges to achieve university status. He was married twice, both wives pre-deceasing him, and had three children.
