Papers of F. S. S. Whittingham including diaries, 1906-1964, wartime papers, 1914-1919, 1939-1950, and books, 1892-1936; Whittingham family papers, 1878-1984, including deeds, 1878-1941, financial records, 1879-1938, probate records, 1880-1929, and photographs, [c. 1890]-[1930s]; papers relating to Flintshire County Council, 1909-1974; papers relating to farming in Flintshire and Wales, 1923-1977; records relating to Hope parish and parish council, 1850-1974; photographs, [late 19th century]-[1920s], relating to Treuddyn parish and school; St Asaph parish magazines, 1914-1926; and miscellaneous material relating to Hope, Caergwrle and elsewhere, 1906-1983.

Frank Smart Whittingham (1895-1984) was born at Hafod Farm, Pontblyddyn, Flintshire, and farmed there for 50 years, taking over the tenancy from his father, William Whittingham, in 1928. He leased Pant farm, Caergwrle, which, like Hafod Farm, belonged to the Plas Teg estate, of the Trevor Roper family. In 1917, he joined the 3rd Reserve Hussars, later transferring to the Tank Corps. During the Second World War, he became an agricultural haulage contractor, and was a member of the War Agricultural District Committee for the Hope and Buckley area. He was a member of the National Farmers Union, becoming Caergwrle NFU chairman and president, and representing Flintshire NFU on the Welsh Regional Committee of the Wool Marketing Board. He was a Flintshire County Council councillor, 1958-1974, and was active on many committees. He was churchwarden at Hope parish church, and governor of Castell Alun High School. He retired to Bryn Iorcyn, Hope, in 1964, and died in 1984. He amassed a collection of papers relating to his farms and properties and his other activities.
