Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
In 1919 a branch of the Continental Guaranty Corporation of New York was established in London; the work of this company was to provide finance for the sale of cars via hire-purchase. In 1922 the London branch became a company in its own right, and was registered in England as the Continental Guaranty Corporation Limited. In 1925 it became a public company and changed its name to United Dominions Trust Limited. The business of the company expanded to hire-purchase of many commodities, and branches were established in the UK, and the first subsidiary company, United Dominions Trust (Electric) Limited, was established in 1929. In 1937, the first subsidiary companies were established abroad in South Africa, Australia and Canada. UDT Industries Limited was formed in 1970 to act as a holding company for the UDT Group's industrial activities, and UDT International Limited was created as a subsidiary in 1972 to act as a holding company for the UDT Group's activities overseas. Further subsidiaries engaged in a range of specialised financial services. In 1973 UDT became a fully authorised bank. UDT merged with the TSBs in 1981; after the merger, UDT's insurance services division was transferred to TSB Trust Company.
