Scope and Content

These records, 1800-1958, accumulated by Joseph Lloyd and Co., Solicitors, are very diverse and reflect the broad spectrum of work carried out by a local Solicitor's firm. They include deeds and associated papers relating to individual conveyancing, and to estates in Flintshire including the Eryl Estate, Bodelwyddan; Bronwylfa Hall, St Asaph; Pendyffryn Estate, Rhyl; and estates in Denbighshire including Rhaggatt Hall Estate, Corwen; Gwaenynog Estate, Denbigh; Bodidris Estate, Llandegla; and the Pentremawr Estate, Llandyrnog. The records also include court cases, claims and disputes including cases of debt, slander, assault, motor accidents, negligence, work-based compensation claims, etc. (1862-1943). There are also settlements, trusts and wills of individual clients (1771-1947) including marriage settlements, divorce papers, and adoption and affiliation papers (restricted access). The papers also include Ministry of Food prosecutions during the Second World War (1940-1941); Licensing records (1855-1947); appeals from Flintshire and Denbighshire men against taking part in Military Service in the First World War (1916-1918); records of road widening; planning; highway and footpath diversions; parish boundary changes; sales of glebe lands (1912-1938); and demolition and compulsory clearance of housing (1925-1943). Amongst the 'miscellaneous' papers are a tenancy agreement for a flat in London for use by the Bishop of St Asaph (1913-1914); a Patent for 'Wireless Receiving Value', invented by Roger Elvan Richards of Rhyl in 1921; and draft rules of the 'Esplanade Club', Rhyl, 1937.

Administrative / Biographical History

The solicitors' firm of Joseph Lloyd and Co., based in Rhyl, Flintshire, were active into the 1970s, and had numerous clients in Denbighshire, Flintshire, Merionethshire, and elsewhere in Wales and England.
