Administrative / Biographical History

William Lewis Jones (1866-1922) was a Professor of English at the University College of North Wales, Bangor, Caernarfonshire. He was the son of William Jones, of Llangefni, Angelsey, and Hannah Lewis. He was educated at Friars School, Bangor, and obtained a scholarship at Queen's College, Cambridge. After graduation in 1888, he went to the U.S.A., where he worked as a journalist and lectured at Chicago University. He returned to Wales in 1889, and in 1891 was appointed assistant lecturer in English at the University of North Wales, and in 1897 became professor. He married Edith Owen of Menai Bridge, Anglesey, in 1901. Their daughter, Luned Lewis Jones (fl. 1902-1951), married Pierce Lloyd Williams (fl. 1911-1951), a surgeon, in 1926. He was the son of Dr Hugh Lloyd Williams (d. 1950). They lived in Tawelan, Bangor. Lt-Col Pierce Lloyd Williams served onboard the hospital ship Aba during the Second World War.
