Scope and Content

This collection consists of notebooks and books belonging to nurse Charlotte Sarah Cornwell, relating to her training and work. These include:

1 Midwifery certificates

Certificate in maternity nursing from Fulham Midwifery and Maternity Training School issued to belonging to Nurse Sarah Charlotte Cornwell, 28 May 1903.

Certificate in midwifery from the Obstetrical Society of London awarded to Charlotte Sarah Cornwell, 10 October 1903, no. 7646.

Midwifery Certificate from the Central Midwives Board awarded to Charlotte Sarah Cornwell, 26 January 1905, no. 12164.

2 Handwritten reference letters:

A letter from J Hawking, 24 York Place, Oxford Road, Manchester. Miss Cornwell appears to have worked as a nurse for J Hacking. Hacking states she was "in every way satisfied" and was "sorry to part with" Nurse Cornwell and offers her future service, dated 20 February 1903.

A letter from a Miss Constance Hacking for her mother Mrs Margaret Hacking, Matron of the private nursing home 24 York Place, Oxford Road, Manchester recommending Nurse Sarah Cornwell as a capable private nurse who had worked with them from 2 October 1899 - 2 November 1902, dated 3 June 1903.

A testimonial for Nurse C A Cornwell "who has been in attendance on a very trying case for five weeks, under my care" signed, "Bea[u]f[ort] Tho[w]ne MD FRCS", Grondall, Farnham, Surrey, 19 Dec 1904.

Reference from Monsall Hospital, where Nurse Cornwell trained 26 July 1897 - 30 Sep 1899 as a fever nurse, dated 4 October 1899.

3 'Slack's Herbal: A treatise of the pathology of disease designed for the use of families' by George Slack, Medical Botanist 10th edition, Potter & Clarke Ltd, London 1910;

4 Handwritten nursing notebook on pregnancy and delivery belonging to Nurse Cornwell. Questions and answers, description of procedure for delivery and anatomical diagrams. Notes on ailments of infants. Calendars printed on inside cover of lined notebook. c.1902-3

5 Small book entitled 'Preliminary Lectures on Midwifery given to nurses at the Fulham Midwifery Training School, St Mary's Nursing Home' by Margaret Mary Caley, Matron. Dedication dated 1901. Belonged to Nurse Cornwell.

6 Four photographs belonging to Nurse Charlotte Sarah Cornwell:

9 A volume of handwritten midwifery lecture notes and six double sheets of loose handwritten midwifery lecture notes. lecture given by Dr Calder, April 1903
