Scope and Content

Jackson's manuscript of his praelection for the Regius Professorship of Greek (following the death of Professor B.H. Kennedy), read before the Vice-Chancellor and members of the Council on 25 May 1889. 'I am now to expound the first and second chapters of the First Book of Xenophon's Memorabilia. The special purpose which throughout I shall keep in view, is, the more exact determination of the causes which led to the indictment, the condemnation, and the execution of the philosopher Socrates: but incidentally I shall have something to say about the state of political parties at Athens towards the end of the fifth century before Christ'. The praelection is written on 37 pages of a quarto notebook. The text includes pencilled deletions, additions and brief side-notes, apparently made after the reading of the lecture. Mounted at the front of the volume is a letter to Jackson from Leonard Whibley, Pembroke College, 24 November 1894, returning the praelection with thanks and comments.
