Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The South Polar Times (SPT) was a monthly journal produced by and for members of the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott), during the winters of 1902 and 1903. Expedition members were invited to contribute articles and poems, which were edited by Ernest Henry Shackleton, typed by Charles Ford, and illustrated by Edward Adrian Wilson. As well as light and humorous articles, SPT also contained summaries of events and meteorological conditions during the previous month. On the return of the expedition, a limited edition of SPT was printed commercially, bound between hard covers in three volumes. In 2000, a second limited edition was published to celebrate the centenary of the expedition. The SPT was reintroduced during the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 (leader Robert Falcon Scott)
