Scope and Content

Printed certificates relating to training in obstetrics and midwifery, including a certificate signed by William Smellie for attendance at midwifery lectures and two certificates issued by the Obstetrical Society of London to midwives (1888 and 1892); together with a letter from students at the University of Edinburgh engaged on Sir James Young Simpson's midwifery lectures.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Obstetrical Society of London was among the first to issue diplomas in midwifery.
