Administrative / Biographical History
The RMS Queen Elizabeth Historical Society manages a museum dedicated to the steam ship Queen Elizabeth in Ararat, Virginia, United States of America . The RMS Queen Elizabeth Historical Society was founded in 1981 by Harold E Philpot, essentially for the purpose of preparing documentary drawings of the RMS Queen Elizabeth, built by John Brown & Co Ltd for the Cunard company, to a scale of one quarter inch equals one foot. Co-founders of the Society were as follows: Commodore Geoffrey T Marr, navigation; Staff Captain Eric Ashton-Irvine, administration; Chief Engineer R E ("Ted") Philip, engineering; Purser John Vincent Robinson, passenger relations; Donald McKellar, of John Brown & Co Ltd, Clydebank, design and draughting; Fred M Walker, Greenwich, naval architect and consultant to the Founder; and Philip Small, Wells, Somerset, art. The society is based at the home of its founder, Harold E Philpot, who has extended a former garage to accommodate a museum dedicated to the ship. In 2002, and was unclear as to whether the society was still in operation.
