Scope and Content

Seven issues, May-December 1944, of a magazine entitled Cymro (issues 2, 3 (unfinished), a special Christmas edition and four Supplement editions), produced by members of the Cymric Club in Stalag IVB prisoner of war camp near Muhlberg, Germany, featuring articles on Welsh sport, Welsh legends and Welsh regiments, and reports on sporting events held in the camp; together with the only two issues, January 1945, of 20 Bees Buzz, a weekly newspaper produced by the inmates of Hut 20B, containing mainly camp news, especially sport and social events.

Contributor Emrys W. Evans, Secretary of the Cymric Club at Stalag IVB, Welsh editor of 'Cymro', and author of the article 'Arthur's Gold' (f. 1): The Revd. Emrys W. Evans and Idwal Davies discussed Cymro in a television interview broadcast, in Welsh, on Hel Straeon, 20 April 1988 (video recording in The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales). Emrys Evans responded to television items broadcast on BBC Wales Today and Newyddion on 3 September 2009, and appeared on the same programmes on 8 September 2009. He visited the Library on 5 October 2009 to record his reminiscences, in Welsh, of life in the camp, including the background of items in Cymro, and of items leant by him to be digitized by the Library. The unedited video recording is now in The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales, Viewing Room V___/DIG/A/18831-2. Photographs taken on the day of his visit are in the NLW Photographic Collection. Personal notes by Emrys Evans, relating to his incarceration at StalagIVB were photocopied by the Library, and are now NLW Facs 1065.

Contributor Idwal Davies (1915-92), author of the Welsh article on 'Meddyliau' (f. 3 verso): six items formerly in the possession of Idwal Davies were donated to the Library by his friend Emrys W. Evans on 5 October 2009, and are now NLW ex 2649.
