Scope and Content

Photographs taken by William Anthony Davies during family outings including to Conwy, Llandudno, Betws-y-Coed, Beddgelert, Caernarfon and Dublin. WAD (1886 - 1909) became a journalist in South Wales following an accident in which he lost his left hand. He later moved to London and wrote for national newspapers, including the popular weekly column 'Llygad Llwchwr'. He competed in the 1962 Llanelli National Eisteddfod as Llyn y Fan; selections of his prose were published as 'Berw Bywyd' in 1968. In 1909 he married Margaret Davies and had two children, Sarah Gwenda (Gwen) and Daniel. Margaret and Gwen can be seen in several of the photographs in the album. As well as family members, notable photographs show Conwy cockpit, Conwy Quay, the graveyard at St Tudno on the Orme with very few graves; a maid (?) called Jinny in Llandudno; O'Connell St, Phoenix Park & Howth Head in Dublin. Margaret died in 1953, and in 1958 WAD married Margaret Williams, the widow of the author Thomas Rowland Hughes. More details can be found in the Dictionary of Welsh Biography. Some images include 'stick men', probably added by WAD's son.
