Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The United Nations General Assembly approved the designation of 1981 as the International Year of Disabled People in Dec 1976. Following consultations between the government and leading voluntary organisations in late 1978, the National Council for voluntary Organisations was invited to organise IYDP in England; the Secretary began work in May 1979. A Committee was appointed after an inaugural meeting of voluntary organisations in Sep 1979 and first met in Dec of that year. Until 1982 it worked through existing groups on its own projects, publicity campaigns and working groups for the aims of: increasing awareness of the needs, abilities and aspirations of disabled people; the participation, equality and integration of disabled people; the prevention of disability; positive attitudes towards disabled people. Its work was continued for a short time by the Snowdon Council 1981-1982.
