Administrative / Biographical History
Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons (Ireland) Ltd , civil engineering contractors, Dublin, Ireland, was incorporated as a limited liability company by the family partnership of Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons , civil engineering contractors, London, England, in 1923 with a share capital of £25,000. The company was established to take control of the parent companies civil engineering contract work in Ireland and act as their agents. The first directors of the company were Sir Robert McAlpine, Sir Malcolm McAlpine and John Barr with Sir Malcolm as chairman. In 1926 , the company won the contract to build a tunnel under the river Liffey from the Dublin Corporation and in 1927 a contract for drainage at New Lotts. In the same year they also won a contract to sink 50 piles for the Annstey Bridge, Dublin. The company was still in operation in 1946 .
