Prof. J. Lloyd-Jones Manuscripts

The collection contains material collected by John Lloyd-Jones whilst compiling his work Geirfa Barddoniaeth Gynnar Gymraeg. The material takes the form of slips of vocabulary, and also slips of place-names, personal names and elements of Gaelic names. The original manuscript of the work is included, proof sheets with amendments and a notebook with references to old and medieval Welsh texts.

There are dissertations, notebooks and awdlau in the hand of John Lloyd-Jones, but most of his poetical works are photocopies of original manuscripts. The testimonials and applications for various posts date from 1909 - 1921.

Born in Dolwyddelan, Caernarfonshire in 1885, J. Lloyd-Jones attended the University College of North Wales where he was taught by Sir John Morris-Jones. He also attended Jesus College, Oxford before receiving a lectureship in Welsh and Celtic at University College, Dublin. He was a poet as well as a scholar and won the chair at the National Eisteddfod in 1922. His most important published work was his study of the vocabulary of early Welsh poetry, Geirfa Barddoniaeth Gynnar Gymraeg (1931 - 1963). He died in 1965.

The manuscripts have been incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts. The vocabulary slips have been arranged alphabetically.

The original manuscripts were presented by Mrs F. Lloyd-Jones, Dolwyddelan, the widow of J. Lloyd-Jones. The photocopies of his poetical works were presented by Rev. William Jones and James Parry, both of Dolwyddelan.
