Scope and Content

Notes from the lectures of David Hume, Baron of the Exchequer of Scotland, on Scots Law, read in the University of Edinburgh in 1811.

The text of the lectures is written on the facing page throughout. The verso is utilised, as required, for supplementary annotations based on related cases subsequent to 1811, mostly in pencil and in the same hand, and all relating to the text on the facing page. All the supplementary material relates to aspects of matrimonial law and is confined to the verso of ff.14-29.

The transcription is dated 1817.

Administrative / Biographical History

David Hume (c.1757-1838) trained in Scots law at Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities and was admitted as an advocate in 1779. He became professor of Scots law at Edinburgh University, and later was also principal clerk of session, and finally baron of the exchequer. His lectures on private and criminal law were well attended, cited in court, and he eventually published commentaries on Scots law. He was the nephew of David Hume, philosopher.
