Eaton Evans Papers

Llewellin, 1795-1968; deeds relating to Pembrokeshire and elsewhere in Wales, letters, wills and other papers relating to numerous clients and their families, 1573-1968, including William Turner Powell and family, 1805-1935, the Harcourt Powell family, [c. 1665], 1744-1968, John Rees of Tenby and the Maitland Trust, 1795-1937, John Davies Lloyd, 1821-1904, Mrs Frances Jane Stokes, 1783-1958, the Ford and Protheroe families of Stone Hall and Skyrme family of Llawhaden, 1683-1895, the Hawkeswell family of Llawhaden and Meare family of Rhoscrowther, 1573-1790, and George Roch of Butterhill, 1596-1859; maps, mainly of Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, 1695-1925; and sale particulars, 1855-1979.

William Evans (b. 1763) of Bletherston, Pembrokeshire, married Mary Eaton of Narberth, Pembrokeshire, in 1787. William became a solicitor in Narberth and later Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. His son, William Evans (1796-1849), continued the family business and took on Jonathan Rogers Powell (1807-1872) as a partner in 1834. They were joined in 1845 by Henry Mathias (1820-[1904]), of Lamphey, Pembrokeshire, to form Evans Powell & Mathias. William's place in the partnership was taken by his nephew, James Eaton Evans, and son Edward Eaton Evans (1835-1924). Edward's son, William George Eaton Evans ([1867]-1939), joined the partnership, now Eaton-Evans & Williams. His son, James Eaton Evans in due course became principal of Eaton-Evans & Morris. T. O. L. Llewellin was another partner in the firm, who left in 1980 to set up his own practice. William Turner Powell (1841-1907) was the son of Jonathan Rodgers Powell. Harcourt Powell (d. 1782) was the son of Thomas Powell of Greenhill, Pwllcrochan, Pemrokeshire, and Ann Harcourt, of Oxfordshire. His descendants adopted Harcourt Powell as the family name and lived at Drinkstone Park, Suffolk. Their Pembrokeshire estates were sold after the First World War. John Rees (d. 1855) of Tenby married Emma Brown (d. 1861) in 1842. Rees set up a trust for their daughter, Emma Knox Rees ([1845]-1923), who married Frederick Maitland in 1862. The trust came to be known as the Maitland Trust and was administered by Evans Powell & Mathias. John Davies Lloyd (b. 1850) of Alltyrodyn, Cardiganshire, died in 1878. His will was contested in the Probate Division of the High Court. Mrs Frances Jane Stokes (formerly Williams, née Morgan) of Fernhill, Haverfordwest, died on 18 February 1927. The Skyrme family came from Shropshire and resided at Llawhaden from the early 17th century. William Hawkewell Meares (fl. 1753) was the son of Elizabeth Hawkewell of Llawhaden and William Meares of Eastington, Rhoscrowther. The Roch family, several of whom were called George, lived at Butterhill, St Ishmaels, Pembrokeshire.
