Papers of Leslie Stanbridge, Archdeacon of York

Papers of Archdeacon Leslie Stanbridge, 1964-2013, including sermon notes and drafts, correspondence, papers concerning 1974 formation of College of Ripon and York St John (now York St John University), and other papers.

Leslie Cyril Stanbridge was born in Bromley, London, in 1920. He trained in St John's College, Durham University and was ordained priest in 1950.
He served his curacy in the diocese of Rochester and then returned to St John's College to serve as tutor from 1951-55, as well as chaplain from 1952. He left in 1955 to become Vicar of St Martin's in Kingston on Hull. He served as Rector of Cottingham from 1964-1972 and was appointed Canon and Prebendary of York Minster in 1968 and Rural Dean of Hull in 1970. He served as Archdeacon of York from 1972 to 1988, when he retired from full-time ministry.
After retirement he continued to serve the York Minster as Archdeacon Emeritus through his role as Succentor Canonicum and as a Canon of York in the Minster's governing body, from which he stood down in 2000 after 32 years. He was also a director of St Leonard's Hospice, York, in the 1990s.
Archdeacon Stanbridge died on 19 March 2015.

The archive was deposited at the Borthwick Institute in the 1970s. A further addition was made to the archive in 2015.

The archive comprises two separate deposits. The first deposit, dated 1967-1975, was received in the 1970s as part of the Clergy Records Project which aimed to document the administrative work of individual members of clergy by preserving the records received and generated in the course of their daily work during 1975. A second deposit of Archdeacon Stanbridge's papers, dated 1964-2013, was received in 2015. In 2017 the decision was taken to unite the two deposits into a single archive.
