Administrative / Biographical History

The Amalgamated Society of Railway Vehicle Wagon Builders, Wheelwrights, Carpenters and Mechanics was established in 1873 as the Amalgamated Society of Railway Wagon and Carriage Makers, Wheelwrights, Carpenters and Mechanics. The Union had a membership of 195 by 1892 and 823 members and 20 branches by 1910. In 1914 the Union absorbed the National Amalgamated Society of Railway Wagon and Carriage Builders and Lifters and changed its name in 1920 to the Amalgamated Society of Vehicle Builders, Wheelwrights, Carpenters and Mechanics. The headquarters of the Union was in Wigan until merger with the Amalgamated Engineering Union in 1945.

Acquisition Information

These papers form part of a large collection that has been deposited in the Modern Records Centre over a number of years. Most of the Records came from the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers (Engineering Section). The first deposits were made in 1984 with further deposits have been made up to 1997.
